Urban Ministries of Durham

In Legacy Center’s Leadership Program, each team creates an extreme makeover project in the community with budgets that usually exceed $30,000. The challenge: the project must be complete in two days, the team cannot use any of their own money, the community performs 75% of the work, and the planning phase is less than one month.
The NC131 Leadership Team c chose the Urban Ministries of Durham, NC as their Legacy project. The Urban Ministries believes that no one should be without the basic needs of food, clean clothing and a safe place to sleep, regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, or disability. Every day, they provide food, clothing, shelter, and supportive services to neighbors in need. The team replaced many malfunctioning items in the large commercial kitchen including a steam serving table, food warming cabinet, two steamers, a commercial strength microwave oven, high-grade cutlery, and a two-burner breakfast griddle. In addition, they placed a high quality play structure and two commercial grade picnic tables outside for young families with children. The budget including all contracted labor, supplies, materials and services was $35,000.
