Battered Women’s Shelter

In Legacy Center’s Leadership Program, each team creates an extreme makeover project in the community with budgets that usually exceed $30,000. The challenge: the project must be complete in two days, the team cannot use any of their own money, the community performs 75% of the work, and the planning phase is less than one month.
Revamped Battered Women’s Shelter

Legacy Center’s NC 106 Leadership Team extensively renovated a battered woman’s shelter, the Woman’s Rehabilitation and Counseling Center in Orlando Florida, in only two days. This extreme makeover project included renovating the front lobby including putting in new flooring, painting, replacing all the old furniture with new furniture, and a security system. A beautiful recreation room with new furniture was created from what once was a storage room. A children’s corner was created complete with TV, DVD, an over 30 DVD library of Disney movies, games, furniture, and custom hand painted murals on the walls. The overgrown garden was cleaned up and replanted. The non-working bathrooms were repaired and made functional. To top it all off, two new desks and computers were installed in the library, complete with Office Suite software and Internet connection. These computers give the children the ability to complete school assignments and the mothers the ability to search and apply for jobs and practice office skills. Budget: $35,000.
